Martha has developed a unique technique for etching metal. Intricate designs are made using an inexpensive die-cutting machine and self-adhesive vinyl that becomes the resist for etching metal. The prepared metal is placed in a saltwater solution and connected to a 12 volt battery. Most patterns can be etched in fewer than 30 minutes. Silver etching requires a different set up using ferric nitrate. Both set ups will be available and explained. The vinyl designs can be used on any metal. The results are amazing in precision, detail and depth. It is perfect for production work.
Martha will demonstrate how to make your designs using the computer software, how to prepare your metal, apply the vinyl, and etch your designs. Beginning, intermediate and advanced metalsmithing students are welcome.
Objective: Each student will fabricate at least one piece of jewelry.
Skill Level: Beginning to Advanced
Materials: Martha will supply all materials.
Cost: The tuition for the 1 day workshop is $100 plus a materials fee.
Even though Martha’s studio is equipped with the necessary hand tools, students are encouraged to bring their own hand tools such as pliers, cone nose plastic hammer, chisel/flat face plastic hammer, scribe, saw, files, etc.
