Martha Fitzmier is a metalsmith, artist and educator. Following careers in literacy education, educational consulting, and selling antiques, she took one course in metalsmithing and was captivated by the concept of creating beautiful things from metal.
Martha’s interest in metals began with creating art jewelry, and her focus quickly expanded to include flatware and hollowware. Her growing interest in tessellation as a three-dimensional art form developed during an apprenticeship with Master Silversmith Julia Woodman, in Atlanta, GA. This experience led Martha to design and manufacture a honeycomb tessellation form used to create her flatware, hollowware and jewelry pieces. You can learn more about the tessellation form here.
In the summer of 2018, Martha and her husband moved to Verona, WI. Soon afterwards she completed the construction of a fully equipped teaching studio — a welcoming setting for students to collaborate, learn new techniques, and hone their skills. You can see Martha’s Verona teaching studio here. Martha has served on the Board of Directors of the Madison Art Guild and The Wisconsin Metalsmiths (WIM). You can learn more about WIM on its Facebook page, here.
Martha’s award winning work has been featured in a number of juried exhibitions. Martha is exploring deep draw hydraulic press forming and experimenting with its unique possibilities for both hollowware and jewelry design. She offers a series of workshops in her home studio in Verona, Wisconsin. You can read more about her workshops here.
